Ohiopyle

This past Saturday, it was 70 degrees in Pittsburgh.  It was the perfect day for our yearly trip to the mountains.  When I told a friend of mine we were going there, she said, "You guys sure do love to go there, don't you?"  We do.  We really do.  When she asked, "Why?", I was a bit dumbfounded.  I think "Why not?" would be a better question.  But, pictures usually do speak louder than words, so...

Memorial Day Weekend

What we did this weekend...

(Went to a picnic/birthday party, and watched Dylan play with his second cousins).

(Spent some time enjoying nature, and throwing rocks in the stream).

(Ran through the sprinkler.  Or, in Dylan's case, tiptoed AROUND the sprinkler, not wanting to get his face wet).

(Jim and my dad planted 12 more of those trees in the background.  Then, we all went to Dylan's favorite restaurant - Eat N Park)

(Finally got the water table set up in the yard, and ordered a sandbox, which should be arriving any day now!)

(Spent some time reading.  No, it's not one of the ones I bought at the library.  I found out the Mom's Club I belong to is going to discuss it at the next book club meeting, and decided to see if the library had it.  I walked up to the librarian and asked her "Do you have a soft place to land?"  Yep, I did.  What was I thinking?  You should have seen the look she gave me!  After I clarified, "Uh, the book?", we both started cracking up.  I should finish it today).

The weekend went by way too fast, even with the extra day.  What did you do?  Hope you enjoyed it!

He's All Hands, But I Don't Care

We were very busy this weekend. Saturday we went to an indoor play area for a birthday party. Besides the kids in our party, there had to be about 5 other parties going on in the place. It was CRAZY. It was LOUD. It was FUN.

Believe it or not, after that we went to the farm. It was in the 70's, and we decided we just couldn't waste a day like that.

Yesterday was a day to run errands. We went to two different Target's, looking for a particular birthday present for Dylan, only to find both stores were out of them. We also went to Dairy Queen to order Dylan's cake for his party, to Lenscrafters for them to fix my bent glasses (guess who did that?), and out for dinner. Dinner was definitely my favorite part of the weekend, despite the fact that we waited over 1/2 hour for our food with a squirmy toddler!

Usually, I make Jim sit next to Dylan at restaurants. I figured it was only fair. I have to supervise all the other meals, so I deserve to "relax" when we go out. Jim usually spends the time complaining about Dylan's grimy hands continously finding their way to Jim's shirt, and I secretly(or possibly not) enjoy watching.

For some reason, yesterday I sat next to Dylan. I had no idea what I was missing! My normally unaffectionate child held my hand, snuggled up to me numerous times, and at one point wrapped his arms around my neck and exclaimed, "Oh Mommy! You're so cute!"

I'm so cute?! From now on, my clothes will all be stained, but I sure will be happy.

A Fun Weekend

We had a great weekend. Saturday afternoon, I got my hair cut by the new stylist I've found. The last time I had a stylist who I enjoyed talking to, and liked how she cut my hair enough to go back was in... oh heck, I'm not sure that's ever happened. A couple of hours in which I had good conversation, and didn't have to fix or clean up food for anyone felt blissful.

Saturday evening, the three of us went to our neighborhood block party. At the age of 37, it is the first one I have attended. Neighbors who are friendly and throw parties to get to know each other vs. neighbors who scowl at you and break into your house. I'm moving up in the world. WOOHOO!!

I enjoyed meeting everyone, and Dylan had two little blond girls chasing him around, and another girl trying to give him kisses, so I'm thinking he enjoyed it also. When Jim was on Dylan Duty, Dylan saw a lady who looked like me from the back, and followed her into her house! Jim had to run into the house and get him. A good way to get shot in our old neighborhood.

Each household was assigned something to bring. We got side dish or salad. I made a strawberry spinach salad for the first time (15 minutes before the party of course!) Laugh at me if you want, but you can't imagine how excited I was when I saw tons of food left over later, but my salad completely gone! Aaahh, sweet success. I'll be publishing my cookbook soon. (Snort)

Sunday, we took Dylan to Living Treasures for the first time. It was fun, but wow, the kid is something else. The qualities that he possesses that will make him an awesome adult, (passionate, curious, independent, and fearless), are the very things that make him exhausting as a 2 1/2 year old. At home, he has to be near Jim and I constantly. When we're out, the objective seems to be to get as far away from us as possible, as quickly as possible. We spent a lot of time saying, "Dylan! Stay with us! Dylan! Get out of there! Dylan! Dylan! Dylan!". His favorites were the prairie dogs, including this one that looked like Buddha,

and Rusty, the pony he got to ride.

We also went to Ikea and then Panera Bread for dinner. Unfortunately, we only came home with markers for Dylan and magazine holders for me, instead of the bed, chairs, bookshelves, and picture that I wanted. I'm not sure why. Something about an indecisive person that I married.

On the way home, Dylan announced with a huge smile, "I'M HAPPY! Mommy, are you happy?! Daddy, are you happy, too?" And, you know, I really was. Then Monday came, and I kind of felt like this guy on the left...

Bad, Bad, Good, Good, Very Good

Today's events...

*We had our open house from 1-4. Trying to keep your house with a very active toddler from looking like a house lived in by a very active toddler is about -2 degrees from possible. So, we got the house looking as good as we could, until Dylan took a nap, then scurried around like chickens with our heads cut off from about 11:30-12:40(the time he slept). At about 12:25, I went outside to water the hanging flower pots on our deck, bought a week ago to "stage" the house. To say we do not have green thumbs would be putting it mildly - the flowers are all just sad, sad, sad already. As I reached up to keep the pot steady, it slipped off the hook and fell to the ground, cracking and throwing soil, along with the sad flowers, all over the deck. If you've seen the movie "Money Pitt" with Tom Hanks you will remember the scene where the bathtub falls through the floor and he just laughs maniacally at it - that was me. I just laughed, and laughed at the soil and those sad flowers like I was watching the comedy channel. Luckily, I did snap out of it. At about 12:38 after cleaning that up (with Jim's help), I reached up to pull out another roll of paper towels out of the cabinet, and spilled an entire bowl of plastic spoons and knives all over the kitchen. Straight back to maniacal laughter. Trying to keep the house in pristine condition - BAD.

*When we had the home inspection at the new house, the inspector found a water leak, but couldn't tell where it was coming from. The current owner agreed to have a plumber come out and find the leak, and get it taken care of. Today, we were told that a plumber came out, and "couldn't find the leak". She wanted us to come over and show her where exactly the leak was. So, we went over, but she wasn't there, so we just tried turning on all the water, to see if it would leak again - of course not. While trying to do that, Dylan was climbing up and down the stairs, touching things he shouldn't be touching, and going places he shouldn't be going. Even though Jim and I were both standing within one foot of him, he tumbled down about 5 stairs before I caught him. Man, that was scary. He seems fine, though, except for a red mark above his one eye.
Trying to do just about anything at a house that isn't babyproofed yet - BAD.

*While the open house was going on, we took Dylan to the park. Jim rarely gets to do that, and with me working 3 days a week, I don't get to do it nearly as much as I would like, either. We played, took a walk, and watched the dogs running around the dog park. Time in the sun as a family - GOOD.

*We went to Sam's Club to pick up some stuff, and I heard a man say "Oh, Hello! Hello!" I turned to see the owner of a local Chinese restaurant that we occasionally go to smiling at me. Every time we go in to that place, he greets us as if we are long time friends. I don't think we have been there in at least 3 or 4 months, probably longer, and I look different with my dorky hair cut, but he not only recognized me, but made a point to say hello! How awesome is that?! People who really understand the meaning and value of great service - GOOD.

*Dylan had his first big-boy-bath in the regular bathtub tonight! At 18 months, you may be asking, "So? What the heck took you people so long?" But, did you know that he HATED getting a bath for about the first 9 months of his life? I'm talking ear rupturing screaming the entire time kind of HATE. After we took him swimming in a lake last summer, his hatred of the water magically disappeared, but not his fear of that big scary looking bathtub. When we tried to put him in, he suction cupped himself to us, and could not be pryed off. But, today, success!! I bought a bubble machine, which was a total rip off piece of junk, but if it helped get him in there in anyway, I love it. A wild and crazy Sunday night happily watching your son enjoy a bath - Very Good, Indeed.
